My Response to a Serious Accusation

It was with sadness and dismay that I opened my mail to see Skip Ogle published a campaign piece accusing me of being soft on sexual predators who victimize children. Nothing could be further from the truth. It pains me even to repeat his false accusation in this response.

Current law protects children. Otherwise every member of the legislature would have worked to close the legal gap. Mr. Ogle cites my vote against HB 1010, a fatally flawed piece of legislation that the Texas Senate killed in committee. I was joined by Representatives Bryan Hughes and David Simpson in that “no” vote.

As a member of the Criminal Jurisprudence Committee, I voted in favor of many new laws to toughen our position on crime and protecting our children is always a top priority. I am saddened, not only by Mr. Ogle’s perverse accusation, but a lack of his credibility on the subject of law enforcement.

I have reason to believe that John (Skip) Michael Ogle has a track record with law enforcement that is relevant to his credibility. So I ask you Mr. Ogle, have you ever been arrested? Have you ever pled guilty to a serious crime? Is there anything in your record with law enforcement that voters should know about in this public job interview and background check? Clothing yourself in the mantle of law enforcement in order to levy an accusation against your opponent should invite scrutiny. I await your response.

Respectfully,

Matt Schaefer
